Arabian Knights. A tale of leadership transformation with Iraqi Deans.

The Foundation for Technical Education in Iraq wanted a world-class development model for its College CEO's  (Deans). It drew from the UK's acclaimed leadership development programme for College Principals.

Dr Mahmood recently said of the Deans Qualifying Programme (DQP) ” We strongly supported DQP from the start. This is an accredited programme which is helping Deans achieve our vision to strengthen the Iraqi economy through local communities. DQP is helping professionalise our senior management”.

Moneer Tolephih, Dean of Baghdad Technical College, said  “There is an expectation that the Dean should manage all the activities inside the college, or at least share every small decision” . This leaves him little time to think about strategy. Since completing DQP, however, he is working to change this culture, coaching his leadership team to help them take responsibility for more decisions. “My main challenge now is how to adapt the tools and techniques I learnt on the programme and to make sure that my leadership team is qualified to adopt them.” (Sunday Times 3 July 2011)

I am Dr. Moneer one of the patecipent in the DQP which directed by Tony, in Iraq when they adopt a dean for leading college that base on his degree as example as Ph.D holder and they did not look after the qualification in the field of leadership, so this program support the Iraqi de ans in their mission and to develop their skills in leadership. Tony fouces on many topics as high performance team, coaching, four rooms change house, innovation as well as to shadowing in UK colleges. There are a great change achieved through the journey of leadership , the Iraqi deans build a new relations with principles of UK colleges through RAWBIT , we exchange ideas and wesdom through many challenges . There are a new culture born on the ground to be adopted systematically in foundation of technical education/ Iraq FTE-Baghdad by the support of RAWBIT and leaded by Mr. Tony Nilson Finally I would like to thank Mr. Tony and his team through leadership journey where all patecipants (9 deans ) achieved the fellow membership at CMI , myself now work with new program for another 26 deans and deputy deans as assessor while the others ( 8 deans ) coachs the new group ,

Dear Dr Moneer  Your active support and advice has been a great source of success for the programme. It is most encouraging that the culture change continues to benefit the Foundation. The link with the Chartered Management Institute gets stronger all the time with the next group of 26 Deans gaining Fellow/Membership status.
